New Student Café Coming to CVCC

A new contract and collaboration between Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) and a local restaurant will bring new breakfast and lunch options to students, faculty and staff on campus beginning the week of August 12.  Market at Main will open both a campus cafeteria and café, offering its most popular entrees, including pancakes, burgers and a variety of sandwiches made with fresh local ingredients.

“We are excited about the opportunity to partner with CVCC to bring a totally different dining experience to the cafeteria,” said Rodney Taylor, owner of Market at Main. “We plan to offer many of our favorites, as well as a few new items.”

“It’s very fulfilling for CVCC to enter into this new contract and be able to provide another option that we know the college community will enjoy.  This is the capstone to a procurement that included receiving proposals to operate our college café, and we could not be happier with the responses we received and the results,” said Lewis Bryant, VP of Finance & Administration at CVCC.

Called Market at Main: CVCC, the restaurant will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday during the academic year. The café will feature expresso beverages, cold brew, smoothies and grab-and-go meals and snacks. Café hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday.

Taylor said he is looking forward to working with Mena Hughes, director of CVCC’s Culinary Arts Program, to provide students with experience in food preparation for the restaurant. He plans to add a daily special onto the menu and wants to offer culinary students the opportunity to prepare the items.

“We have employed CVCC culinary students at our restaurants,” continued Taylor. “They are great to work with and eager to learn. We think the opportunity for them to show off their skills to their peers will bring an element of excitement to our daily offerings.”

This restaurant will be the third location for Market at Main. The other two restaurants are located on Main Street in downtown Lynchburg and in the Boonsboro Shopping Center.

Market at Main opened in 2009, after almost a year of extensive renovations to the restaurant’s historic building.  Located at 902 and 904 Main Street, the structure has been home to many well-known businesses during the past century. Market at Main downtown is situated in what were originally two buildings. The entrance side of the restaurant (904 Main Street) was built in 1886, while the lunch counter side (902 Main Street) was constructed in 1907.
