Brookneal Mayor James “Champ” Nowlin has been named as the 2019 Grand Marshall of the annual Brookneal Christmas Parade scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 5, 7 p.m.
Nowlin was elected mayor in the 2018 election replacing former mayor Phyllis Campbell who retired as mayor at the end of 2018. She currently serves on town council.
Brookneal Chamber of Commerce Vice President came to the November town council meeting to ask the mayor to serve as grand marshall.
Nowlin is a popular figure around town and has been a tremendous asset to the town.
He and his wife, Mary Ann, live on Clark Street. They have two daughters, Nicole Dow and Natisha Dew.
He worked for VA Power for 33 years before retiring to Brookneal in 1985. Nowlin has been on council since 1992.
He is proud of the many things that council has accomplished through the years as it has worked to modernize the town, work on the streets, water system, and much more. “We still have a lot of work left to do to maintain what we’ve done and keep everything in place. We’ve done a lot of things and I’m just glad to be a part of it,” he says. “We will continue to do the work to help our citizens. We don’t have a lot of businesses here, but the ones we have are outstanding. We will keep moving forward with what we have and keep going. We’re a small location, but we will not give up. We’ll keep pushing!”
