“There is nothing I put out, I wouldn’t serve to my mother,” said Frank Lafata.
Lafata and his cousins, Mario Amato and Chris Verne, are the co-owners of Rustburg’s newest restaurant, Angela’s. The trio combines for 61 years of restaurant experience and began working 40-hour shifts as teenagers.
Located at 69 Barricks Lane, Suite A, in Rustburg, the Italian restaurant opened its doors Dec. 6.
Lafata said they named the restaurant after his aunt.
“She was my godmother, one business partner’s mother and another’s aunt,” he said.
At Angela’s, the menu offers a full Italian course from eggplant parmesan, spaghetti and fettuccini alfredo to pizza.
“I’m so glad to have my dad, Anthony Lafata, who is the head chef, on our staff. He has a very high quality of food knowledge,” Lafata said.
The restaurant also offers daily lunch specials and pizza specials. Wednesday through Friday, fresh soups, such as broccoli and cheese, potato, minestrone and Italian wedding, grace the menu.
“My biggest joy of serving the food is seeing a smile. They look at you and are like, wow. That’s the biggest joy I get out of this business, whether it’s a pizza or a cheese stick. I take pride in something like a cheese stick.”
Angela’s also offers its own homemade house dressing, which was created in 1989.
“It was created by my uncle, who was heard clanging on pots and pans to get the perfect recipe, and has been a staple of every restaurant we have had,” Lafata said.
The restaurant currently employs 13, and Lafata said there are plans to hire five to seven more employees. He also said the restaurant plans to host parties, school events and meetings.
Lafata said there is also a two-year plan to change the interior, which will include new flooring, ceiling and the décor.
“We want to get opened here first and establish a home,” he said. “I believe if we treat the community like gold, than they will treat us like gold. We don’t want them to leave hungry or unhappy.”
Angela’s, which is managed by Ivan Boise, is open seven days a week, Sunday through Thursday, from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m.-10 p.m.
