Plans are underway for the 43rd Annual “Fun Float Day” which will take place in Long Island on Saturday, June 22.
It is sponsored each year by the Long Island Ruritan Club. In addition to floating down the river, the day features breakfast, lunch, dinner, and live music at the Long Island Ruritan Club.
Guests are encouraged to place a canoe, tube or other floating device in the Staunton River boat dock and participate in a community-wide river float to Brookneal.
Proceeds from the day benefit the worthy causes of the Long Island Ruritan Club. Mary Robertson is President of the club and organizer of the Fun Float Day.
A wearable (it fits the person), serviceable (it's not rotten or torn, etc...) PFD or personal flotation device (life jacket) is required for each person on board a canoe, kayak, or other vessel. There will be a label or stamp from the coast guard on each life jacket that will show a chest and or weight measurement to determine what size person the life jacket will fit. A small child cannot wear an adult size life jacket and will fall out of it in the water!
Canoes and kayaks over 16 feet are exempt from the Type IV requirement of a throw ring as long as they do not have a motor.
The activities start on Saturday with breakfast at 7 a.m. with floats typically entering the river between 7 - 10 a.m. A delicious breakfast featuring bacon, eggs, fried apples, biscuits, jelly, coffee and juice is available.
There will be lunch served later that day featuring barbeque and hot dogs from 11 a.m. until closing. The popular fish fry will take place at 5 p.m. Fish plates are $10 a plate.
Some campers arrive the night before. A permit from the Campbell County Recreation Department is required for camping. You must either pick up the permit in Rustburg ahead of time get the permit on site on Friday afternoon or Saturday.
Free entertainment will be offered Saturday evening.
Throughout the day, the Ruritan Club will be selling t-shirts for $15.00 and raffle tickets for a Yeti cooler valued at $300 that will be given away at 8 p.m. on Saturday night. Tickets are $5 per chance or $50.00 for a book of chances. You do not have to be present to win.
Proceeds from the day are used to provide donations to the local fire department, rescue squad, and Hunters for the Hungry.
The Long Island Ruritan Club also makes numerous community-related donations to private individuals who suffer from medical and fire needs.
Proceeds also benefit the upkeep of the club house as well as provide 50 fruit baskets at Christmas for shut-ins.
“We’re trying to think of other things to do too,” Robertson said. “We really want to thank all of our volunteers who help us pull off the fun float each year. We couldn’t do it without them.”
Although the fun float doesn’t draw thousands of people like it used to, the hundreds who participate seem to have a ball.
“We really appreciate the support from the community and surrounding towns. I encourage you to come out and celebrate with us whether or not you float down the river,” she says.
