Two people were transported to Lynchburg General Hospital Tuesday morning (November 19) after shots rang out on Charlotte Street in Brookneal. According to Campbell County Sheriff’s Office Major Captain Darren Bolling, about 5 a.m. he responded to the 200 block of Charlotte Street near Brookneal Elementary School about shots fired. Two separate calls came in close together about the shooting and a stabbing.

Police do not say what caused the incidents or if they are related.

Bolling said at the time there was no threat to the community.

The men were identified as being in Brookneal visiting relatives. When police arrived on the scene, 23-year-old Eric Cazares of Covington GA was walking on Charlotte Street with a gunshot wound to his chest. Twenty-one-year-old Jose Ortiz of Conyers GA was at a home on Marshall Street suffering from a stab wound to his shoulder.

Ortiz was treated and released while Carares was in critical condition at the hospital.

On Friday, Campbell County Investigator Stuart Herndon said, “Sadly, the gunshot victim passed away on Wednesday.”

The incidents are still under investigation by Campbell County Sheriff’s Office.
