The long-awaited Christmas season has arrived in the Brookneal and surrounding area. Many holiday events are happening this week with more to come. Be sure to send your events to dferrell@theunionstar.com to be included in the calendar. 

Parade season will be in full swing this week. Brookneal Christmas Parade will kick things off Thursday, Dec. 5, 7 p.m. The annual Altavista Christmas Parade is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7, 5 p.m. Phenix Christmas Parade will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2 p.m., with the Rustburg Christmas Parade set for Sunday, Dec. 8, 3 p.m.

Brookneal Chamber of Commerce will present the annual Christmas Open House in downtown Brookneal on Friday, Dec. 6, 5:30 - 8 p.m. Many businesses will be open to offer special sales, giveaways, refreshments, etc.

The annual Christmas Open House at Red Hill will be held on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 2 - 4 p.m. The Patrick Henry Auxiliary sponsors this event and cordially invites the public to attend; admission is complimentary, but donations would be appreciated.

Guests will be treated to docent-guided tours of the historic buildings at Red Hill, including Patrick Henry’s house, Law Office, and other buildings, all decorated for the holiday by the Red Hill Garden Club. Complimentary hot mulled cider, Brunswick stew prepared by the Charlotte Lions Club and homemade cookies will be available throughout the afternoon. The gift shop will be offering a 10% discount on its regular shop merchandise on this special day. The Museum Shop has many items that are perfect for gift-giving, including the award-winning Red Hill Wine collection.

The annual Christmas play, “Twinkletoes TOO,” will be held this week at 246 The Main Cultural Arts Center in Brookneal on December 6,7, and 8.

Santa Claus will be at Long’s Farm Supply located at 1103 Lynchburg Ave., Brookneal, on Saturday, Dec. 7, 8 a.m. - 12 noon. Free reindeer feed samples will be given to the kids. Bring your own camera.

Heritage Hall is hosting Breakfast with the Grinch on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.! Join us for a gourmet breakfast buffet complete with a hot chocolate bar! There will be vendors for Christmas shopping! Photos with the Grinch (Bring your own Camera). Magic Reindeer Food. Christmas Craft. Letter to Santa. Grinch Goody Bags. Cost is $5 for adults and $10 for children. Kids 2 and under Free. RSVP to Autumn at 434-376-3717. All proceeds go to Resident Aid. We are looking forward to seeing you!

This past Sunday, the annual tree lighting ceremony was held at Renan Volunteer Fire Department with a special service presented by the department. 

The “Tree of Lights” tree lighting event will be held at Long Island Ruritan Club at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14. 

Rustburg tree lighting will take place Friday, Dec. 8, 6 - 6:45 p.m. at 774 Village Highway, Rustburg. 

The 4th Annual Holly Jolly Market “I’m Dreaming of a White Christmas” will be held Saturday, Dec. 7, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m., at Childrey Baptist Church, Nathalie.

Santa and Mrs. Claus are visiting each branch of the Campbell County Public Library with crafts, games, and the always popular Snowflake Alley. Light refreshments will be served. These events provide a great opportunity for family fun and a picturesque backdrop for your holiday photos. Events: Rustburg Library, Friday, Dec. 6, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.; Patrick Henry Memorial Library, Brookneal, on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 6 - 7:30 p.m.; and at Timbrook Library on Saturday, Dec. 14, 3 - 5 p.m.

Faith Christian Academy in Hurt will hold a Christmas Craft and Vendor Fair, Saturday, Dec. 7, 8 a.m. - 2 p.m. There will be door prizes and a bake sale. Breakfast and Lunch will be available for purchase. Proceeds from the Bake Sale will help fund a mission trip for the FCA Class of 2020.

Avoca Museum will present the “Christmas at Avoca” event on December 7, 8, 14, and 15. 

Claire Parker Foundation will present the “Deck The Heels” 5K Night Run on Saturday, Dec. 14, 5 p.m., at 1019 9th Street, Altavista. Register at runsignup.com. Also happening that night at the event will be food trucks, music, hot chocolate and coffee, toy shopping, and a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.
