Clara's now open for business

When driving along E. Rush Street in Brookneal something colorful may be catching your eye. “Clara’s” has opened at 209 next door to Brookneal Optical. Owner-operator Clara Ashburn has kept her sidewalk child, larger sizes including teen, junior and adult clothing, jewelry and accessories, baby equipment and furniture items. She also carries household misc. and some vintage and antiques.

Inside the storefront is a feast for the eyes of new and gently used baby-small-child clothes and furniture. She also carries some antiques and adult clothing.

A grand opening will be held Saturday, Sept. 7, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. She invites everyone to stop by for refreshments and to register for prizes!

This is actually her sixth similar store that she’s opened in Chesapeake and Suffolk in Virginia, in Arkansas, and California. She shares, “My sister Cindy Floyd of Rock-A-Bye Baby OBX inspired me to open my own shop. Cindy has been in business for 40 years and recently expanded her location. Our mother, Nora Roach, also had a shop for 30 years My nephew and his wife have a Rock-A-Bye Baby OBX at Virginia Beach. I have been in business for 25 years and our family bonds with our customers. I absolutely love what I do!”

Ashburn is originally from Chesapeake and relocated to California to move closer to her daughter for eight years. She then wanted to move her mother back home to Virginia so she could spend quality time with her sisters who live in the Danville area.

Her mother passed away earlier this year, but Ashburn is planning to stay since she has fallen in love with the town and its friendly residents. Opening the store is a project of love as she works hard getting all of her merchandise set up and displayed to its full advantage.

Right now she’s in two rooms, but will have much more space later down the road. “I hope to open up the back area to vendor spots for more variety, and crafters are welcomed to inquire. My middle room has great lighting for perhaps a photographer for special occassions such as pictures with Santa, fall and Halloween, mother and father’s day, spring and Easter, birthdays, etc,” she says.

Clara’s will carry baby and children’s clothes, new and gently used, sizes newborn to larger, including adult clothing. Baby equipment and cribs will be available including swings, high chairs, large items, and toys that may be consigned. “I like to offer unique items that are rare to find. Antique furniture and large pieces may also be consigned and there is a variety of items including jewelry and accessories. Donations are welcome and greatly appreciated with layaway available.”

The store is open Monday-Saturday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. and on Sundays 12 noon - 3 p.m. Payment is accepted at this time by cash or personal check. Call 434-446-7310 for more information.
