Delia Dawson Tanner

Delia Dawson Tanner, 93, of Gladys died Sunday, June 9, 2019 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Robert Lee Tanner, Sr. for fifty-four years.

She was born March 11, 1926 in Campbell County, a daughter of the late Henry Holt Dawson and Elizabeth Strickland Dawson. She was a member of Diamond Hill Presbyterian Church, a homemaker that loved gardening, flowers and the natural world. She was known by many for her all-consuming, giant, full of love hugs and her beautiful welcoming smile. Delia was an encourager that exemplified the beauty and grace of a strong courageous child of God. Her never ending faith, kindness and love will forever be remembered and cherished. “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue” Proverbs 31:26

She is survived by two sons, Robert L. Tanner, Jr. and his wife, Karen of Gladys and Ray Tanner and his wife, Susan of Gladys; three daughters, Wanda Kay Guthrie and her husband, Jerry of Gladys, Lydia T. Baber of Gladys and Betty T. Massie and her husband, T.W. of Roseland; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; and a number of extended family and friends.        

She was preceded in death by four sisters, Virginia McNeil, Margarette Estepp, Sally Compton and Katie Puckette; and three brothers, Charlie, Joseph and Aubrey Dawson.

A funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 12, 2019 at Diamond Hill Presbyterian Church, Gladys by the Rev. Christy Mitchell.

The family will receive friends from following the service at the church.
