Robert Gordon Owen, 71, of Brookneal passed from life on earth February 3, 2020, at Bedford Centra Hospice, following several years of declining health. He went peacefully in the company of his devoted and loving friend Sue Rankin.
Robert was born October 12, 1948, in Martinsville, he was the son of the late Ephineas Gordon Owen and Mildred Scott Asher. A proud and lifelong resident of Southside Virginia, Robert was a graduate of William Campbell High School, attended Ferrum College and served in the U.S. Army. He was a retired tobacco and cattle farmer, had an enduring love of the land and enjoyed watching the earth produce crops from tobacco, to grains, and flowers.
He is survived by a brother, James Gordon Owen and wife, Coco Lopes, of El Salvador; and a first cousin, Margie Scott of Enterprise, Fla; close friends, Joe Lunsford, Kelly and Terri Crabtree, Larry and Jean Nash all of Brookneal.
Robert always marveled at the beauty of nature, especially the changing seasons and the constant kaleidoscope seen in the sunset each day. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting deer, turkeys, and ducks. He also hiked most of the mountains in Bedford, Amherst and Nelson Counties with friends in the Appalachian Trail Club. Perhaps Robert’s favorite hike was the long, strenuous climb to the top of “Old Rag Mountain” in Madison County which he did many times with Joe Lunsford and others. In addition to hunting and hiking he loved to sail on Buggs Island Lake, he always said the thrill of the wind in his face when sailing was an experience almost beyond words.
A celebration of life in Robert’s memory will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2020, at Brookneal Presbyterian Church with Reverend Herndon Jeffreys officiating.
