William Campbell and Altavista boys’ basketball contests showcase an intense rivalry, and the fans got their money’s worth in a Dogwood District double overtime thriller in Altavista last Tuesday. In the end, the Colonels came out on top, 72-70.

The hometown Colonels jumped out to a 17-7 first quarter lead, but the Generals kept chipping away at that 10-point margin. By halftime it was 28-21, after three quarters 41-44, and by the end of regulation the Generals had managed to level the score at 56 apiece. The first overtime left the outcome inconclusive, as each team scored 7. After two overtimes, the Colonels walked away with a close two-point win, thanks to a Lance Bain jump shot in the final 12 seconds.

Three players from each team scored in the double digits. For the Generals, Brennan Stone led the way with 23, while Nikia Peerman added 15 and Zekeya Townes chipped in 12. For the Colonels, Lance Bain put away 27, Trey Jones netted 22, and Christian Gilbert scored 14.

The Colonels improve in the Dogwood District to 2-5, while the Generals are now 3-3 in district competition. The Generals go on the road to play a non-district matchup against Central Lunenburg on Wednesday, while the Colonels travel to archrival Gretna for a rematch of another overtime game.
