Virginia Beach Police said they received a report at 11:23 p.m. about an armed carjacking in the 1500 block of Twin Oaks Drive. Officers responded and gathered descriptions of the suspects and the stolen vehicle before broadcasting the information.
A VBPD officer later spotted the stolen vehicle on I-264. When the officer attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle continued onto eastbound I-64, lost control, and crashed on the exit ramp to Exit 291B at I-464, police said.
According to Virginia Beach Police, the suspects fled from the wrecked vehicle, prompting a foot chase. During the pursuit, a VBPD officer fired at one of the robbery suspects, but the suspect was not struck. A VBPD K9 unit located and apprehended that suspect shortly after, while the second suspect was found and arrested without incident. Police also recovered two firearms at the scene.
“This successful apprehension is attributed to the excellent police work of the VBPD and the multi-agency support,” Chief Paul W. Neudigate said in a statement. “Swift action ensured these dangerous individuals will no longer threaten our community. Let me be clear, if you come here from another jurisdiction to commit violent crimes, we will find you, chase you, and hold you accountable.”
No officers were injured.
Because the officer fired their weapon in Chesapeake, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the criminal investigation into the firearms discharge. Once completed, State Police will submit their findings to the Chesapeake Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for review.
After the criminal investigation concludes, the Virginia Beach Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit will conduct an administrative review to determine whether all department policies, procedures, and training were properly followed.
