Authorities in Houston are investigating a fatal traffic accident that claimed the life of a 20-year-old man following a crash on the South Freeway during heavy rain on April 18, 2026. The victim has been identified as Trevor Gregory.

According to information released by the Houston Police Department, the crash happened at approximately 4:20 p.m. in the 10550 block of South Freeway, also known as South State Highway 288.

Weather conditions at the time included heavy rainfall, which investigators believe played a role in the loss of control.

Police reports indicate that a black Cadillac CT4 was traveling southbound when the driver encountered difficulty due to the wet roadway.

The vehicle reportedly lost traction, causing it to veer off the main lanes of traffic. It then crashed and came to rest on its driver’s side in a roadside ditch. Officials further stated that the vehicle became submerged in water after leaving the roadway.

Emergency response was swift. Personnel from the Houston Fire Department, along with bystanders who witnessed the incident, rushed to the scene to assist the occupants. Both the driver, identified as Trevor Gregory, and a 19-year-old female passenger were pulled from the submerged vehicle.

The two individuals were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite medical efforts, Gregory was later pronounced dead by attending doctors.

The female passenger survived the crash but was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. Her current status has not been publicly updated.

Houston Police Department Vehicular Crime Division Sergeant V. Vo and Officer R. Ramos are leading the investigation.

Officials have stated that the cause of the crash is still being examined, though preliminary findings suggest that weather conditions and loss of vehicle control were contributing factors. Investigators will also review speed, road conditions, and any other potential influences that may have led to the incident.

The crash has been classified as fatal, and standard investigative procedures are underway. This includes a detailed reconstruction of the scene, vehicle examination, and review of any available surveillance or witness statements.

Authorities have not indicated whether any charges or citations are expected at this stage.

Trevor Gregory’s death marks another tragic incident on Houston roadways during adverse weather conditions.

Officials often remind drivers to exercise caution during heavy rain, reduce speed, and maintain control to prevent hydroplaning or similar accidents.

The Houston Police Department has not released additional personal details about Gregory or the injured passenger out of respect for the families involved. Notifications to next of kin were made following standard protocol.

As the investigation continues, authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has relevant information to come forward to assist with the case.

The South Freeway section where the crash occurred experienced temporary traffic disruptions following the incident while emergency crews worked at the scene and investigators documented evidence.

This case remains under active investigation by the Houston Police Department Vehicular Crime Division. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
