Maxwell Conly Cox was a 19-year-old student from Washington, North Carolina, whose life touched many people in his community and beyond.
He was born on March 31, 2006, in Newport News, Virginia, to Jennifer Conly Cox and James Maxwell Cox, and spent his childhood in Franklin, Virginia, where he grew up surrounded by family and friends.
During his high school years, he attended Nansemond Suffolk Academy, where he became known for his energy, leadership, and commitment to both academics and athletics.
He participated in varsity football and varsity lacrosse, and also gave his time to mentoring younger students as a flag football coach, which reflected his willingness to support others.

After graduating in 2024, he went on to attend Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, where he joined Delta Chi Fraternity and pursued his goal of studying Construction Management with plans to serve in the United States Marine Corps after graduation.
He also worked as a powerboating counselor for Camp Sea Gull in Arapahoe, North Carolina, during two summers, where he guided and mentored young campers and helped create meaningful outdoor experiences.
Those who knew him describe him as someone who brought warmth and positivity into every environment he entered and who valued friendship, travel, and time spent outdoors fishing, camping, and exploring the natural world around Boone and beyond.
Max passed away unexpectedly in a car accident on March 28, 2026, in the Blue Ridge Parkway area near Blowing Rock, North Carolina.
His passing has left a deep void for his family, including his parents Jim and Jen Cox, and his siblings Henry, Lizzie, and Jack, along with extended family members who cherished him deeply.
A funeral service is scheduled for April 11, 2026, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Washington, North Carolina, where friends, family, and community members will gather to honor his life and the impact he made.
Instead of flowers, the family has requested donations to a camper scholarship fund in his name, supporting YMCA Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer, continuing his passion for helping young people experience camp life.
