Brett Matthew Houghton was born on October 29, 1968, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Ronald and Connie Doran Houghton. He was the eighth and youngest child in his family.
From an early age, he developed a strong work ethic and a deep sense of loyalty to family and friends that remained with him throughout his life.
Brett graduated from South Tama High School in 1987 and entered the workforce soon after. Over the years, he held several jobs, including driving a milk truck and working for Manatts.
He also built and operated several of his own businesses. He was widely respected for his dedication, dependability, and willingness to work hard in every role he took on.
He was a devoted father to four children, Taylor Houghton with Yesenia, Austin Houghton with Bree, Allie Jack, and Bria Houghton. He also welcomed two stepchildren, Skyler Smith and Dalton Smith, into his life and treated them as his own.
Brett took great pride in being a grandfather to Carson Houghton, Brayson Jack, Olivia Jack, Caselynn Drury, and Johanna Drury.
Family was central to Brett’s life. He is survived by his siblings Chris Blocker with Bill, Terri Stigers, Maryellen Houghton, Ron Houghton with Susan, Steve Houghton with Michelle, Pat Houghton with Jeana, and Connie Gardalen with Paul.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by many aunts, uncles, and cousins who had been important parts of his life.
Brett enjoyed simple pleasures and found joy in everyday moments. He was a loyal fan of Iowa Hawkeye football and liked watching dirt track racing. He also enjoyed occasional trips to the casino.
He was often seen driving a lawnmower and was known for wearing shorts even during cold Iowa weather. His personality was outgoing, and he often showed affection in a teasing manner that those close to him understood and appreciated.
He enjoyed welcoming friends and even strangers to his home for a conversation and a drink on the patio.
Those who knew Brett remember his strong work ethic, his humor, and his generous spirit. He had a way of making connections with people from all walks of life and was always willing to lend a hand when needed.
In his final moments, he was surrounded by the love and presence of his children and grandchildren, a reflection of the strong family bonds he maintained throughout his life.
A celebration of life gathering will be held from noon to four in the afternoon at the Michael J Manatt Community Center in Brooklyn, Iowa, on Sunday, March 29, 2026.

Brett’s memory will live on through his children, grandchildren, siblings, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life was defined by hard work, family devotion, and a personality that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

He will be remembered not only for his hard work but also for the way he brought people together with kindness and sincerity. His legacy remains in the hearts of those who knew him, forever cherished by family and friends, always deeply.
