Juan Angel Gasca, 25, of Genoa, Illinois, was remembered as a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and friend whose life was defined by service, compassion, and dedication to others.
Gasca died on Monday, April 6, 2026, while off duty, according to local officials and his obituary published by Butala Funeral Home and Crematory in Sycamore.
His passing has left his family, colleagues, and the DeKalb County emergency services community in deep mourning.
Life and Service
Juan Gasca was born on November 12, 2000, in DeKalb, Illinois, to Jose and Maria Gasca.
He was their only son and the eldest of four siblings, growing up alongside his sisters, Paola, Jennifer, and Jocelin. Family members described him as a deeply caring older brother who always supported his sisters and worked to set an example for them.
Gasca attended Genoa Kingston High School, where he participated in football and baseball. Baseball was his favorite sport, and he remained active and competitive throughout his youth.
After high school, he pursued training at KEC, where he discovered a strong interest in firefighting and emergency medical care.
He began his career as an emergency medical technician and later advanced to become a paramedic. Over the years, he worked with multiple fire and rescue departments across DeKalb County, including Kirkland, Malta, Huntley, and Genoa.
Eventually, he joined the DeKalb Fire Department, where he served for four years as a firefighter-paramedic.
Colleagues described him as a dedicated professional who valued teamwork and mentorship. He also enjoyed teaching fire safety to children and participating in community outreach programs.
Outside of work, he loved fishing, hunting, golfing, playing pool, and cooking for family and friends. His passion for preparing meals on his smoker became one of the many ways he expressed care for those around him.
Community Mourning and Legacy
Gasca was engaged to his longtime partner, Leyah Langley. The couple met in 2019 and shared seven years together before he proposed in August 2025.
Family and friends said he was excited about building a future and marriage, and he spoke often about his plans and hopes.
Following news of his passing, tributes poured in from across DeKalb County and neighboring communities.
Fire departments, law enforcement agencies, and residents expressed sorrow and solidarity, describing him as a valued brother in service and a friend to many.
DeKalb Fire Chief Luke Howieson said the department was focused on supporting Gasca family members and colleagues during the difficult time.
City officials also emphasized the close bond among firefighters and paramedics, noting that the loss had deeply affected the entire department.
Mayor Cohen Barnes called the death devastating, stating that Gasca’s dedication and service reflected the best qualities of the department. Community members gathered at fire stations and posted messages of support, while flags were lowered in his honor.
Gasca’s funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2026, at St Catherine of Genoa Church, followed by burial at St Catherine Cemetery. The service is expected to be private, with respect given to the wishes of the family.
Across DeKalb County, he is remembered not only for his professional commitment but also for his kindness, humor, and generosity. Loved ones said his ability to bring people together and brighten any room will remain his lasting legacy.
