A North Carolina jury has ordered TikTok influencer Brenay Kennard to pay $1.75 million to the ex-wife of her manager after finding her liable for ending the couple’s marriage.
The lawsuit, filed by Akira Montague, accused Kennard of having an affair with her husband and manager, Tim Montague, ultimately leading to their divorce. Kennard, who has 2.9 million followers on TikTok and 274,000 on Instagram, was found guilty on counts of alienation of affection and criminal conversation — both recognized under North Carolina law.
According to WBTV, Kennard “engaged in behavior designed to seduce” Tim Montague and “flaunted her affair and romantic relationship” both publicly and privately. The pair reportedly began living together in Greenville, North Carolina, after Tim left his wife and children.
After nearly two years of legal proceedings, a jury awarded Akira $1.5 million for alienation of affection and $250,000 for criminal conversation. The case drew attention online, as videos showed Kennard and Tim appearing together in TikToks prior to the ruling.
Akira’s attorney, Robonetta Jones, said her client “received justice from losing her husband and the father of her children.” Kennard reportedly argued that Akira had consented to the relationship, but the jury sided with the ex-wife, who said the affair caused emotional distress and disrupted her family life.
Only seven states, including North Carolina, still recognize alienation of affection and criminal conversation laws — statutes that allow a spouse to sue a third party for interfering in a marriage or engaging in an extramarital relationship.
