Inmate Dies After ‘Apparent Attack’ at Greensville Correctional Center

On This Post

An inmate at the Greensville Correctional Center in Virginia has died after an “apparent attack” by their cellmate early Tuesday morning, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC).

Officials said the incident happened around 3:10 a.m. on Nov. 11, when a corrections officer called for help from a supervisor. Responding staff found one inmate on top of their cell partner, who was unresponsive.

Corrections team members immediately began life-saving efforts until first responders arrived and took over. The inmate was pronounced dead at 4:30 a.m. by a doctor.

A VADOC spokesperson described the attack as an “isolated incident.”

“Greensville Correctional Center is secure and there is no active threat to corrections team members or the inmate population,” the spokesperson said.

The VADOC Office of Law Enforcement Services is leading the investigation into the death.

This attack comes just weeks after a September fight at the same prison that left three people hospitalized.
