A Kentucky man is facing charges after authorities say he severely neglected his mother, leaving her confined to a recliner for months inside a home filled with trash and hazardous conditions.

Jeremy Cook, 38, has been charged with knowingly abusing or neglecting an adult after first responders discovered his mother in extremely poor health at their Mount Vernon residence.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by NBC affiliate WLEX, Rockcastle County EMS arrived at the home on Oct. 20 after Cook reported that his mother was having trouble breathing. When they entered, responders found her sitting in a recliner surrounded by piles of trash and severe structural damage to the flooring.

EMS personnel reported that the woman was wearing a feces-filled heavily soiled diaper that appeared unchanged for several days, and her chair and body showed signs of insect activity. Medical staff later discovered multiple wounds and dried bugs on her when she was transported to the hospital. Officials estimated she may have been seated in the chair for up to two months.

Cook, who told police he had been his mother’s caregiver since August, claimed he changed her diaper three times daily and bathed her twice a week. Investigators said the conditions they found were inconsistent with his account.

Following an investigation, Cook was arrested on Oct. 31. A judge set his bond at $50,000. He has since been released and is awaiting his next court date.
