A devastating fire tore through a garage on North Broad Street in Mankato early Thursday morning, leaving an estimated $40,000 in damage and claiming the lives of several household pets.
The Mankato Public Safety Police and Fire Departments responded to the call at 9:05 a.m. and arrived at 1504 North Broad Street to find the garage fully engulfed in flames, according to an announcement on the City of Mankato’s official website.
Firefighters were able to contain the blaze and prevent further destruction, but the fire completely destroyed the structure. Several pets died in the incident, though a few were saved by the homeowners who were present at the time.
No fatalities were reported. A 51-year-old man suffered minor injuries and took himself to the hospital for treatment. Officials have not released additional details about his condition as the investigation continues.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Public safety officials are examining the scene to determine what sparked the blaze, leaving homeowners and the community shaken by how quickly an ordinary morning turned into a destructive and heartbreaking event.
