The Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) has identified the corrections officer killed during an attack at River North Correctional Center Monday morning.
Officer Jeremy Lewis Hall, 40, died at a hospital after the assault. Hall had worked for VADOC since April 25, 2024.
“Our agency, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and corrections professionals around the nation join us in mourning the loss of Officer Hall,” VADOC Director Chad Dotson said. “Our hearts continue to be with Officer Hall’s family, friends, and his fellow public safety heroes at River North.”
Two other corrections officers were also injured in the attack. Both were treated at a hospital and released. VADOC’s Office of Law Enforcement Services continues to investigate.
The agency says the assault occurred around 7:53 a.m. on November 17 and was carried out by an inmate at the Independence facility. The inmate’s name has not been released. Officials confirmed the prison was secure by late Monday morning.
Governor Glenn Youngkin offered condolences, saying he and his wife, Suzanne, are praying for Hall’s family and for the injured officer’s recovery. “God bless all the men and women who put their lives on the line every day as Virginia Department of Corrections officers,” he said.
U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith also issued a statement expressing heartbreak over Hall’s death and support for all corrections officers in Virginia’s Ninth District.
Chuck Simpson, president of CWA/NCPSO Local 2204, called the attack “senseless” and said the organization stands with the officers’ families and coworkers. “Officers in these facilities face tremendous hurdles and potential dangers every day,” he said.
