Minnesota Opens Energy Assistance Program to Help St. Louis Park Residents With Rising Utility Costs

Minnesota officials have announced that the state’s Energy Assistance Program is now available to eligible St. Louis Park residents struggling with increasing natural gas and electricity costs. The program provides financial help for utility bills from October 1, 2025, through May 31, 2026, with grant payments sent directly to Xcel Energy and CenterPoint Energy.

The rollout comes despite a six-week delay in federal funding caused by the recent government shutdown, and local leaders are urging qualified households to apply as soon as possible.

In addition to bill assistance, participants may qualify for free home weatherization services, which can include:

  • Added insulation

  • Furnace repairs or replacement

  • New water heaters

  • Solar panel installations

These improvements aim to cut energy usage and lower long-term utility costs.

Residents who are currently struggling to pay their bills can also request payment plans directly through their utility providers. Officials recommend informing the companies if an Energy Assistance application is pending, which may allow temporary flexibility until grant money arrives.

If customers are unable to reach a satisfactory payment arrangement, they can contact the Consumer Affairs Office of the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission for further help.

Additional support is available through the Citizens Utility Board of Minnesota, which offers resources and guidance to consumers facing high energy expenses. For many households bracing for winter, these programs offer critical relief to maintain heat and essential services.
