The first winter storm of the season is moving through the Middle Ohio Valley and central Appalachians, bringing snow, freezing temperatures, and hazardous travel conditions through Tuesday morning.
The National Weather Service in Charleston reports that snow showers will continue throughout the day and evening before tapering off overnight. Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for Charleston, Beckley, and Elkins, where 4 to 8 inches of snow are possible, with locally higher amounts in mountainous areas. Surrounding regions are under Winter Weather Advisories, with 2 to 4 inches expected.
Temperatures are forecasted to drop into the 20s tonight, with wind chills in the teens and single digits in higher elevations. Wind gusts up to 40 mph may create blowing snow and significantly reduce visibility.
The NWS warns that bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads could be slick, especially during the evening and early Tuesday commute. Drivers are advised to slow down, allow extra travel time, and monitor updated forecasts before heading out.
Even areas with light accumulations could see slushy conditions and rapid visibility changes during brief bursts of heavier snow, particularly in the mountains.
