One person was killed early Sunday morning in a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 77, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash happened just after 5 a.m. in the northbound lanes near the 8-mile marker in Carroll County. Multiple agencies responded, including the Hillsville Fire Department, the Cana Fire Department, and Carroll County Fire Rescue. Authorities said several passenger vehicles and a tractor-trailer were involved.

Investigators reported that a pickup truck traveling in the left lane struck the rear of a tractor-trailer before veering off the left side of the interstate and into the median.

A short time later, a 2020 Tesla traveling in the left lane attempted to move into the right lane and collided with a second tractor-trailer. The Tesla then returned to the left lane and struck the tractor-trailer involved in the initial crash.

Firefighters said the Tesla driver was trapped in the vehicle. State Police confirmed the driver died at the scene. Their identity has not yet been released.

Emergency crews transported several people to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Officials have not released the total number of injured individuals.
