Man Gets 10-Year Sentence, Probation for Shooting at Minnesota State Trooper

A Minnesota man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison and three years of probation for shooting at a state trooper along Interstate 94 in September 2024.

Eddie James Freeman, 24, pleaded guilty in October to first-degree assault and two counts of second-degree assault. Prosecutors dismissed two additional second-degree assault charges and one fourth-degree assault charge at sentencing.

I-94 Shootout

Freeman and a state trooper exchanged gunfire on Sept. 21, 2024, after troopers responded to a crash near Dowling Avenue North. Dispatch had reported gunfire while troopers were heading to the scene.

When a trooper approached the crashed vehicle, Freeman opened fire and struck the squad car, investigators said. The trooper returned fire, but no one was injured.

What Led to the Crash

The driver told investigators Freeman was riding in the passenger seat when he grabbed the steering wheel, causing the crash, shortly after she ended their relationship. She said Freeman got out of the vehicle, and she heard gunshots moments later.

Threats to Bystanders

Two good Samaritans who stopped to help told investigators they saw Freeman pointing a gun at them before hearing gunshots and fleeing for safety.
