Man Charged With Second-Degree Murder After Brother’s Remains Found on Spirit Lake Reservation

D’Angelo James Hunt, 26, is facing federal second-degree murder charges after his brother, Isaac Hunt, who went missing in March 2024, was found deceased behind their father’s home on the Spirit Lake Reservation.

Family members discovered a human skull on November 15, prompting further searches that recovered additional remains, along with clothing and shoes matching what Isaac was wearing when last seen. DNA evidence links D’Angelo Hunt to a violent altercation at the residence on March 3, 2024. Blood on a TV stand matched D’Angelo’s DNA, while blood under the living room floor matched Isaac’s, making it 41 quintillion times more likely to belong to him than an unknown person, according to FBI analysis.

Multiple witnesses reported Facebook videos showing Hunt holding a knife while Isaac pleaded for him to calm down. Hunt initially gave conflicting accounts to investigators, later admitting to an argument in which he claimed Isaac cut him, although financial records contradicted his statements regarding a supposed $500 cash exchange.

The case is under federal jurisdiction because both men are enrolled members of the Spirit Lake Tribe and the alleged crime occurred on tribal land in Benson County, falling under Title 18 U.S.C. §§ 1111 and 1153.

Hunt is currently held at the Grand Forks County Corrections Center. On Nov. 17, the Spirit Lake Nation confirmed the remains were Isaac Hunt’s, acknowledging the family’s long struggle for closure and the profound pain caused by his loss.
