Man Rescued from Thin Ice on Lake of the Woods

A Minnesota man was rescued Thursday afternoon after becoming stranded on thin ice with his portable fish house on Lake of the Woods.

The fisherman called for help at 1:12 p.m., reporting he was surrounded by roughly 400 feet of open water while standing on unsafe ice, according to the Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office.

Emergency responders from the sheriff’s office, Baudette Fire/Rescue Squad, and Lake of the Woods Ambulance quickly arrived at Graceton Beach Access. The sheriff’s office deployed an airboat to reach the man at Fred’s Beds Access, successfully completing the rescue without injury despite hazardous conditions.

Officials warned that ice conditions can vary significantly and change rapidly due to weather and wind. They urged everyone to exercise extreme caution when venturing onto early-season ice.
