More Than 500 Women Sue Virginia Hospital Over Unnecessary Surgeries by Former Doctor Javaid Perwaiz, Seek $10 Million Each

A total of 510 women have filed lawsuits against a Virginia hospital and its executives, each seeking $10 million in damages over unnecessary surgeries performed by former doctor Javaid Perwaiz, who is already serving a 59-year prison sentence for medical fraud. While Perwaiz’s crimes are widely known, the victims are now targeting the leadership of Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, alleging executives were aware of his actions and failed to stop the abuse.

Javaid Perwaiz Performed Unnecessary Hysterectomies, Collected Medicaid Funds

For decades, Javaid Perwaiz told patients they needed urgent surgical procedures to prevent serious health risks. These invasive operations included hysterectomies and dilation and curettage procedures, which are typically used to clear the uterine lining after a miscarriage or to treat heavy bleeding. In some instances, he falsified pregnant patients’ due dates so he could induce labor early based on his own schedule.

Because many of his patients were covered by Medicaid, the number of surgeries directly increased his earnings. Investigators said he lived an extravagant lifestyle, owning five luxury vehicles and shopping at high-end stores.

Over a 10-year period, more than $20 million was billed through fraudulent claims. Perwaiz’s actions left many patients deeply traumatized, with some suffering lasting harm, including incontinence and the inability to have sex.

The case came to light after the FBI received a tip indicating that women were arriving at the hospital without knowing which procedures they were about to undergo.

The misconduct reportedly occurred between 2010 and 2019. After Perwaiz was arrested, the hospital distanced itself from him, stating it was unaware of his actions. His medical license was revoked in 2020, and he was sentenced to 59 years in prison in 2021.
