Raleigh Mother and Teacher Killed in Home Invasion; Suspect Arrested, Police Say

A Raleigh mother and longtime private school teacher has died after a violent home invasion early Saturday morning, and police say a suspect is now in custody.

According to the Raleigh Police Department, officers responded just before 6:35 a.m. to reports of a home invasion in the 800 block of Clay Street, near Fred Fletcher Park. First responders found a woman inside the home suffering from severe head injuries caused by an assault. She was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

Police later confirmed the victim, Zoe Welsh, 57, died from her injuries. Authorities initially reported an incorrect age. Welsh was a mother and a respected teacher at Ravenscroft School, where she worked in the Upper School Science Department.

Later Saturday, police arrested Ryan Camacho, 36, identifying him as the suspect in the attack. Officers said Camacho was taken into custody without incident. Following an interview with detectives, he was charged with murder and felony breaking and entering, according to court records.

Camacho is being held at the Wake County Jail without bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for Monday at 1:30 p.m. in Wake County District Court.

Friends and colleagues described Welsh as a deeply caring educator and friend. Childhood friend Lisa Ginger, who met Welsh in middle school, said she was heartbroken by the loss, calling it “very, very sad to know that she is not here anymore.”

Ravenscroft School released a statement mourning Welsh’s death, describing her as a cornerstone of the school community and confirming that grief counseling and support services will be available for students and staff.

Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce also issued a statement expressing condolences to Welsh’s family and praising officers for their swift response.

“This arrest sends a strong message that violent crime will not be tolerated in the City of Raleigh,” Boyce said.

Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
