Joseph Omar Ballas of Munhall passed away on March 17, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by devotion to family, commitment to community, and a lifelong spirit of service.
Known affectionately by many as Omar, he was widely respected and cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
He shared more than five decades of marriage with his wife, Susan Muha Ballas, a partnership marked by mutual support, shared values, and enduring companionship.
Together, they built a family that became the center of his life. He is survived by his children, Angie McConnell with her husband Ryan, and Michael Ballas with his wife Lindsey.
His role as a grandfather to Kendall McConnell and Nolan McConnell brought him great pride and joy, and he embraced family life with warmth and dedication.
Born to the late Michael and Mary Tutko Ballas, Joseph was also a beloved brother. He is remembered by his sisters Audrey Kamensky, whose husband Gene preceded her in death, and Dorothy O Malley, whose husband Jim also preceded her in death.
His brother Robert Ballas is remembered along with his wife Joan, who survives him. Joseph was preceded in death by his brother Robert in the family narrative shared among relatives, and he leaves behind a wide circle of extended family members and friends who valued his presence and character.
Joseph devoted thirty years of his professional life to US Steel, where he established a strong work ethic and formed lasting relationships with colleagues.
Beyond his career, he demonstrated a deep commitment to civic engagement in Munhall. He served for many years as a borough councilman, contributing to local governance and community development.
His involvement extended to membership in the Munhall Sanitary Sewer Municipal Authority, as well as more than two decades of service on the Munhall Democratic Party Committee. Through these roles, he played an active part in shaping and supporting the community he called home.
A lifelong supporter of Pittsburgh athletics, Joseph was known as an avid follower of Pitt sports. His enthusiasm for local teams reflected his broader connection to the region and its traditions.
Friends and family recall his energetic personality, his approachable nature, and the genuine kindness he extended to others. His love for animals was also a notable part of his life, and he is remembered fondly by his companions Hunter, Bo, and Larry.
Those closest to him describe Joseph as a man whose life centered on family values, loyalty, and generosity. He was regarded not only as a husband, father, and grandfather, but also as a steady presence in the lives of many who knew him.
His ability to form meaningful connections and maintain long-standing relationships contributed to the strong sense of community that surrounded him.
Visitation for Joseph will be held at Savolskis Wasik Glenn Funeral Home in Munhall, with family and friends invited to gather on March 20, 2026, during scheduled afternoon and evening hours, as well as the following morning.
A blessing service will take place at the funeral home at noon on March 21, 2026. These services provide an opportunity for loved ones to honor his life, share memories, and support one another during this time of loss.
Joseph Ballas leaves behind a legacy that reflects a life well lived, grounded in service, family devotion, and community involvement. His memory will continue to be cherished by all who knew him, and his impact will be felt for years to come.
