The small community of Barnum, Minnesota, is grieving the loss of 25-year-old Tyler Nynas, who was killed in a single-vehicle crash Sunday evening in Thomson Township.
The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed his identity following notification of next of kin, bringing a heartbreaking close to a weekend that shook the tight-knit northern Minnesota community.
Deputies responded to the scene at approximately 6:29 p.m. on Sunday after receiving a report of a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Thomson Road and Kangas Road. Upon arrival, officers found the vehicle had left the roadway, with two men inside. Tyler Nynas was pronounced dead at the scene.
His passenger, 26-year-old Alexander Wheeler, also of Barnum, was airlifted by LifeLink III air ambulance to Essentia Hospital in Duluth, where he remains in critical condition.
The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed no other vehicles were involved. The crash remains under active investigation.
Responding agencies included the Cloquet Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Cloquet Area Fire District, Esko Fire Department, and Carlton Fire Department.
A Life Cut Short in Hibbing
Tyler Nynas had been living and building a life in Hibbing, Minnesota, where he worked as a Welder-Fabricator at Ziegler CAT in Buhl since October 2022.
He was a graduate of Hibbing High School and was in a relationship with Lainey Kainz, whom he had been with since March 2023.
Friends and family took to social media in the hours following the news to share memories and express shock over his passing.
In the midst of the grief flooding online, a separate family came forward to clarify that photos circulating under Tyler Nynas’s name did not belong to the victim.
A Facebook account under the same name posted a message stating the images being shared were of a different Tyler Nynas from their family, asking that people stop using their pictures.
It is a painful but telling reminder of how quickly misinformation can spread during times of tragedy, and how deeply these moments affect not just those directly involved, but anyone who shares a name or face with a story this devastating.
Community Calls for Answers
As the investigation continues, those who knew Tyler are left searching for answers and leaning on one another for support.
At just 25 years old, he was young, employed, and, by all accounts, building something for himself in the Iron Range. His loss leaves behind people who loved him and a community that will not easily forget him.
The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office has indicated additional information will be released as the investigation progresses. Anyone with information related to the crash is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office directly.
Alexander Wheeler’s condition, as of the latest reports, remains critical. The community continues to hold both families in their thoughts during what is an incredibly difficult time.
