BCA Identifies Officer and Suspect in Plymouth Use-of-Force Incident

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has identified the officer and suspect involved in a Nov. 25 police shooting in  Plymouth. Officer Jacob Coopet, a 23-year law enforcement veteran, shot 44-year-old Atanas Hristev of Champlin during a domestic disturbance call.

Around 4:30 a.m., Coopet responded to a report of a man knocking on an apartment window on the 6100 block of Quinwood Lane North. When he arrived, he encountered Hristev in the parking lot. Investigators say Hristev pointed a handgun at the officer, prompting Coopet to fire, hitting him.

Officers provided medical aid before transporting Hristev to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition. BCA crime scene personnel recovered a handgun, spent shell casings, and squad-car video from the scene.

The Plymouth Police Department placed Coopet on critical incident leave, and the BCA is now handling the investigation. Once completed, the agency will forward its findings to the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, which will decide whether charges are warranted. No timeline for that review has been released.
