Bedford Teen EJ Wilkerson, 15, Dies After Drowning at Aurora Quarry Lake

A peaceful Thursday afternoon in Aurora, Ohio turned into a community tragedy when 15-year-old Eugene “EJ” Wilkerson of Bedford lost his life after drowning at Quarry Lake.

The incident has left family members, friends, and neighbors across the greater Cleveland area heartbroken over the sudden loss of a young teenager who was described by those who knew him as bright, funny, and deeply loved.

Emergency dispatchers received a 911 call shortly after 4 p.m. reporting that a teenager was struggling in the water along the 300 block of Treat Road. The Aurora Fire Department and Portage County Water Rescue Team responded quickly, arriving at the scene within minutes and immediately beginning search operations in the lake.

What rescue workers encountered when they entered the water made their job significantly harder than anyone anticipated.

Quarry lakes are notorious among water safety experts for their dangerous swimming conditions. The water sits unusually cold year round, drops to extreme depths without warning, and carries almost no visibility beneath the surface.

Divers searching for EJ were essentially working blind in dark, cold water while the clock kept ticking on any realistic chance of survival. Rescue teams searched for more than two hours before finally locating his body at approximately 6:15 in the evening, submerged ten feet underwater and a mere twenty-five feet from the shoreline.

The closeness of where his body was found to dry land made the news even harder to process for many people following the story. He was within reach of shore, yet the conditions of the quarry made finding him feel nearly impossible in real time.

A Young Life That Touched Everyone Around Him

Emergency medical personnel did everything within their power to save EJ after he was brought to the surface, but their efforts were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene, making the long search along Treat Road end in the worst possible outcome for everyone who had gathered hoping for a different result.

Portage County authorities have opened a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the drowning. Officials have not released specific details about what led EJ into the water or what caused him to go under, and those questions remain unanswered as the inquiry continues.

Word of his passing traveled fast across Cleveland-area social media platforms. A memorial tribute shared by the Cleveland Remembrance Page drew more than 12,000 reactions and hundreds of comments from people expressing grief and offering condolences to his family.

Among the responses, one person who knew EJ personally described him as an amazing friend to her family and called him a very bright and funny kid, words that painted a picture of a teenager whose personality left a lasting impression on the people around him.

EJ Wilkerson was 15 years old. He had a mother, a family, and a community of people who are now left to mourn a future that was taken far too soon on an otherwise ordinary afternoon in Aurora, Ohio.
