Belleville High School ROTC Commander Aiden Dornbos, 17, Dies in Memorial Day Weekend Car Crash

The Belleville, Michigan, community is grieving the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Aiden Dornbos, a 17-year-old Belleville High School student who passed away on May 23, 2026, following a tragic car accident.

He was a passenger when the crash occurred, just hours after he had spent part of his Memorial Day placing flags on the graves of veterans — a final act of service that speaks deeply to who he was as a person.

Born on November 11, 2008 — Veterans Day — Aiden seemed destined for a life defined by dedication and purpose. Those who knew him say his birthday felt like a sign, a quiet foreshadowing of the path he would choose.

He was not just a student or a teenager finding his way. He was a young man already living with intention, already giving back, already leading.

At Belleville High School, Aiden served as the Commanding Officer of the Naval Junior ROTC program, a role that required not only discipline but genuine respect from his peers.

His JROTC instructor, known to students simply as “Dominic,” described Aiden as his favorite student, a distinction earned through hard work, reliability, and an uncommon sense of character.

Classmates and community members who knew Aiden remember his infectious smile, his caring nature, and the quiet confidence he carried without arrogance.

A Future That Inspired Everyone Around Him

In March 2026, just months before his graduation, Aiden made a decision that filled his family and teachers with tremendous pride. He enlisted in the United States Navy and earned a position in the Navy’s Nuclear Program, one of the most competitive and intellectually demanding tracks available to new recruits.

It was a remarkable achievement that reflected the kind of focus and intelligence Aiden brought to everything he pursued.

He was preparing to walk across a graduation stage with the Class of 2026 and then begin a life of service to his country. That future has now been stolen from him and from everyone who loved him.

His classmate MyKailah Cordle shared a message that captured the grief many young people in Belleville are feeling right now. She recalled spending days with Aiden during the summer, laughing and simply enjoying each other’s company.

“You were so young,” she wrote. “You’ll always be missed.” It is that kind of memory, ordinary and warm and irreplaceable, that makes his loss feel so enormous to those who were lucky enough to be part of his life.

A Community Rallying Together in His Honor

In the days following his passing, family friend and community organizer Lindsay Freda launched a GoFundMe campaign to help Aiden’s family cover funeral, burial, and related expenses.

The response has been immediate and generous, with donations pouring in from friends, classmates, teachers, coworkers, and strangers moved by his story.

As of this writing, the campaign has raised more than $3,400 toward its $11,000 goal, with contributions continuing to grow by the hour.

This Memorial Day weekend, as the nation paused to honor those who gave their lives in service to the country, Belleville lost a young man who was just weeks away from beginning that very journey. Aiden Dornbos was 17 years old. He deserved so much more time.
