The search that gripped the Surfside Beach community for days came to a heartbreaking end on Tuesday afternoon when authorities confirmed the body of 11-year-old Joshua Lahai had been recovered from the waters off the Texas coast.
The young boy had been missing since Sunday evening after being swept away by a large wave while swimming with his youth football team.
Surfside Beach Police Chief Philip Hester confirmed that Lahai’s body was found around 1:15 p.m. on Tuesday, located approximately half a mile west of where he was last seen.
An officer discovered the boy in the water roughly a hundred yards from shore along Beach Drive, near the same stretch where his shorts had been found during the search on Monday.
A Day at the Beach Turns Tragic
What began as a routine outing for a youth football team from Richmond quickly turned into a nightmare. The group had gathered near Ocean Avenue at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday when Lahai and another child ventured out into the water, swimming roughly 150 yards offshore.
According to Texas EquuSearch, a large wave struck both children. One child managed to make it back to shore safely. Lahai did not resurface.
His family was present on the beach and witnessed the moment he was swept away, adding an unbearable weight to an already devastating situation.
Rescue crews launched their search within minutes of the incident, with efforts continuing through the night and into the following days.
A Community United in the Search
Throughout the search, law enforcement, rescue teams, and volunteers worked alongside organizations like Texas EquuSearch in a relentless effort to find the young boy.
On Monday, crews located his shorts in the water near Beach Drive, providing a key reference point for the ongoing operation. Search teams pressed forward on Tuesday, covering wide stretches of the coastline and surrounding waters.
The breakthrough came when an officer working the area stopped to speak with a fisherman, and it was during that encounter that the boy’s body was spotted in the water. Authorities moved quickly to recover him and formally confirm his identity.
Joshua Lahai was 11 years old. He had been at the beach enjoying time with teammates and coaches, doing what many Texas kids do on a warm weekend afternoon.
His death is a reminder of how quickly conditions in open water can shift, and how devastating those moments can be for families, teammates, and entire communities.
The Surfside Beach Police Department has not released additional details regarding next steps, but Chief Hester confirmed the recovery and extended condolences to the Lahai family.
Texas EquuSearch, which played a role in coordinating the search efforts, had been involved from the early stages of the operation.
The area where Lahai went missing sits along the Brazoria County coastline, a stretch of beach that draws visitors from Houston and surrounding suburbs, particularly during the warmer months.
No formal statements have been made by the football organization that the boys were associated with.
As of Tuesday evening, the investigation remained active. The community continues to mourn the loss of a young life taken far too soon.
