Breaking: Suspect Shot After Opening Fire on Officers in Papillion Parking Lot

A chaotic sequence of events unfolded across Papillion, Nebraska on Friday night, ending in an officer-involved shooting in the parking lot of a busy Home Depot and leaving one suspect hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

It began, according to police, with a reported shooting at Tara Plaza, a commercial area off North Washington Street. Officers responded to the scene near Ming’s Restaurant, where witnesses say the suspect had opened fire.

By the time police arrived, the suspect had already fled the area in a vehicle, setting off a chain of events that would stretch across several miles of the city before coming to a violent end.

Officers located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit. The chase took them through a residential and commercial stretch of Papillion, at one point passing through the area of 96th Street and Portal Road.

Witnesses in that area told KETV they heard gunfire and spotted bullet holes in a nearby business, suggesting the situation was already dangerous well before it reached its conclusion.

A Chase That Kept Moving

The vehicle eventually made its way to the Home Depot near East Sixth Street and Washington, a well-traveled retail corridor that would have been active with evening shoppers. Witnesses described watching the police pursuit turn into the parking lot, followed almost immediately by the sound of gunshots.

Papillion Police Chief Chris Whitted confirmed late Friday night that the suspect fired upon officers during the pursuit, and that officers returned fire.

He noted that from his initial understanding, the suspect was the first to shoot in the Home Depot parking lot, though he was careful to clarify that the full exchange remains under active investigation. Multiple officers discharged their weapons.

The suspect was struck and transported to a local hospital with injuries described as life-threatening. No officers were hurt, and no bystanders were reported injured despite the shooting occurring in a public parking lot during evening hours.

Agencies on Scene, Investigation Underway

The response drew personnel from multiple agencies. Officers from the Papillion Police Department, the La Vista Police Department, and the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office were all involved in the incident.

The Sarpy County Force Investigation Team, which handles officer-involved shooting reviews in the region, has taken over the investigation.

Chief Whitted addressed the public directly following the incident, offering reassurance that the situation no longer posed a danger to residents. “There’s no danger to the public,” he said. “Everybody is safe from a citizens’ standpoint.”

Still, the incident left a visible mark on the community. Two separate crime scenes, multiple bullet holes, a high-speed pursuit through populated areas, and a critically wounded suspect in the hospital all point to a night that escalated fast and tested the response of several local departments simultaneously.

Police said they expected to release more information as investigators pieced together the full timeline connecting the initial shooting at Tara Plaza to the final confrontation at Home Depot.

As of late Friday night, the exact circumstances leading to the original disturbance at Ming’s Restaurant had not been fully detailed publicly.

The investigation is ongoing.
