Causes of Death Revealed for Five U.S. Hunters Found Dead

Causes of death have now been confirmed for five U.S. hunters who were found dead over the past several weeks.

Deer hunting season is underway across the United States, with most states opening the season in late November. While hunting remains a popular tradition, several states have recently faced tragic losses during the season.

In recent weeks, five hunters across the country were found dead, raising concerns within the hunting community.

Five U.S. hunters were found deceased:

  • Douglas John “DJ” Olin Edmond Jr., 50, in South Carolina

  • Garret Verdun, 45, in Louisiana

  • A 26-year-old hunter in Wisconsin

  • A 45-year-old hunter in Texas

  • An Amish hunter in Pennsylvania

Officials have since released the causes of death in all five cases.

Edmond Jr. died from accidental drowning while attempting to cross a body of water. Verdun died as a result of an accidental gun discharge.

Authorities said both the Wisconsin and Texas hunters also died due to accidental firearm discharges. In Wisconsin, the hunter fell from a tree stand, causing his weapon to fire. In Texas, the gun discharged while the hunter was getting into a vehicle.

The Amish hunter in Pennsylvania died after being struck by a bullet during a “deer drive,” a hunting practice in which one group pushes deer toward another group of hunters.

Investigations into each incident are ongoing, though officials believe all five deaths were accidental.

While hunting continues to be widely enjoyed across the country, these incidents highlight the serious risks involved when safety measures are not strictly followed.
