Chesterfield Student Injured After Driver Ignores School Bus Stop Signals, Police Say

On This Post

A Chesterfield County student was struck by a vehicle Friday morning moments after stepping off a school bus, according to police.

The crash occurred around 11:37 a.m. in the 12400 block of Riverway Road. Investigators say the driver of a white Kia Sorento failed to stop for a Chesterfield County Public Schools bus that had its red lights flashing and stop arm extended — a clear violation of Virginia law.

The child, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police say the driver remained at the scene and has been charged with reckless driving under the state statute requiring motorists to stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251.
