Nearly twenty-four years after the disappearance of Michelle Rust in Baltimore County, Maryland, police have announced a major development in the long running cold case with the arrest of her husband on a murder charge.
Authorities confirmed that Dwight Rust Jr., 48, has been indicted by a grand jury and taken into custody in connection with her disappearance, which dates back to the summer of 2002.
Michelle Rust was last seen on July 20, 2002, when she reportedly left her home on Clarke Boulevard in Halethorpe around 9:30 in the morning.
According to statements previously provided to investigators by her husband, she was going to a store to pick up items for their young son’s third birthday celebration.
She never returned home after leaving that morning, and no confirmed sightings of her were ever established afterward.
From the beginning of the investigation, several details raised concerns for detectives. Neighbors told police they did not see Michelle leave the residence or observe her driving away in the family’s 1988 green Dodge Caravan.
Despite an extensive search, there was no trace of her travel activity. Investigators also found no financial activity after her disappearance, including no ATM withdrawals, no credit card use, no checks written, and no signs of banking access, which added to suspicions that something had gone wrong.
A significant early discovery in the case involved Michelle Rust’s vehicle. During neighborhood searches, her father-in-law located the green Dodge Caravan parked at the intersection of Zion Road and Clyde Avenue in Lansdowne.
The van was unoccupied, and investigators noted that a key was broken off inside the driver’s side door lock, an unusual detail that further deepened the mystery surrounding her disappearance.
Over the years, Baltimore County police and Michelle Rust’s family continued to pursue leads, though none produced a confirmed location or explanation for her whereabouts.
