Authorities are searching for 23-year-old inmate Charles Edward Babb after he escaped from the Chowan County Detention Center around 8:10 p.m. Sunday.
Babb is considered dangerous and may be armed. He is described as a white male with brown hair and brown eyes, and he was last seen wearing an orange jumpsuit. He also has a distinctive teardrop tattoo under his right eye.
Officials say Babb was last spotted near the Bridge Turn Exxon in Edenton.
Law enforcement is urging residents to lock their doors and windows, stay indoors, and avoid approaching Babb under any circumstances. Anyone who sees him or notices suspicious activity should call 911 immediately.
The escape prompted a critical public safety alert, and authorities continue to advise the community to take extra precautions.
