The heartbreaking loss of Sgt. Declan J. Coady has left the West Des Moines community and the entire state of Iowa in mourning.

As tributes continue to pour in, the family has launched the Declan J. Coady gofundme campaign to help cover funeral, travel, and memorial expenses following his tragic death overseas.

Declan J. Coady, 20, of West Des Moines, Iowa, lost his life on March 1, 2026, while serving in Kuwait. According to the U.S. Army Reserve, he was among four Army Reserve soldiers killed during an unmanned aircraft system attack at the Port of Shuaiba in Kuwait in support of Operation Epic Fury.

He was posthumously promoted from specialist to sergeant in recognition of his service and sacrifice.

Coady served with the 103rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), based in Des Moines, Iowa. Military leaders described him as a dedicated soldier who embodied honor, courage, and commitment. Lt. Gen. Robert Harter, Chief of Army Reserve and Commanding General of the U.S. Army Reserve Command, expressed deep condolences and vowed that the sacrifices of the fallen soldiers would never be forgotten.

A 2023 graduate of West Des Moines Valley High School, Declan enlisted in the Army Reserve the same year. He was also a current student at Drake University, where he balanced his academic goals with his commitment to military service. Those who knew him described him as a bright young man with a strong sense of duty and a heart for others.

State and national leaders have shared messages of sympathy and support. Kim Reynolds called him a young Iowan who heroically answered the nation’s call to duty. Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst also honored his service, offering prayers for his family and fellow soldiers. Members of Iowa’s congressional delegation echoed similar sentiments, recognizing his ultimate sacrifice in defense of the country.

In the wake of this devastating loss, family friend Marianne Crandall created the Declan J. Coady gofundme page titled Support for the Coady Family After Declan’s Loss.

The fundraiser aims to ease the financial burden associated with funeral arrangements, travel expenses, and other unexpected costs during this difficult time. Within hours of its launch, the campaign saw an outpouring of support, raising tens of thousands of dollars from hundreds of donors who wanted to stand beside the Coady family.

The GoFundMe page describes Declan as more than a soldier — he was a beloved son, family member, and friend whose presence brought light to those around him. Supporters are encouraged to donate if possible or share the fundraiser to show the family they are not alone.

As West Des Moines and the broader Iowa community grieve, they also honor the life and legacy of a young man who stepped forward to serve. The overwhelming response to the Declan J. Coady gofundme campaign reflects the deep impact he made in just 20 years — a life defined by service, dedication, and love for his country.
