AUGUSTA COUNTY, Va. (theunionstar) – Virginia State Police are investigating an incident in which an attempted arrest by Augusta County authorities turned violent Wednesday night, leaving a deputy wounded by gunfire and the suspect dead.
The shooting occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. on the 800 block of Parkersburg Turnpike, about two miles west of Staunton. State Police said three members of the sheriff’s office narcotics unit were at the location to carry out an arrest.
According to Sheriff Donald Smith, a fight broke out during the encounter, and one of the deputies was shot in the upper arm. It remains unclear who fired the shot.
The suspect died at the scene. Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity.
