A woman in Pennsylvania who was on her lunch break died on Thanksgiving after a driver hit her and sped away, only to crash into another motorist with his Honda Accord and injure them, authorities say.
Rosa Mar Espinosa Rodas, 41, was crossing Market Street at 36th Street in Philadelphia when Shamir Miller, 30, struck her with his 2012 Accord and took off, according to local CBS affiliate KYW. Miller allegedly kept driving down Market Street and slammed into a 2013 Buick LaCrosse just two blocks away near 34th Street, KYW reports.
After allegedly hitting the Buick, police say Miller stepped out of his Honda and tried to run from the scene. Officers caught him near 32nd and Market Streets after a foot chase, according to KYW.
Paramedics arrived quickly after the hit-and-run involving Espinosa Rodas, but they couldn’t revive her. She died at the scene. The driver of the Buick was hospitalized with neck and back injuries and was listed in stable condition over the weekend.
Reports say Espinosa Rodas worked near the intersection where she was hit and had just stepped out for her lunch break. Nicaraguan media outlets, including Articulo 66 and Pixel Channel Nicaragua, describe her as a native of Nicaragua who was living and working in Philadelphia. The outlets, along with local ABC affiliate WPVI, allege that Miller was speeding and driving recklessly before the hit-and-run. Police have not released details on what caused the crashes.
Her family is reportedly raising money to return her body to Nicaragua, where they plan to bury her.
Miller faces charges of murder, homicide by vehicle, and aggravated assault tied to the two alleged incidents. His next court date remains unclear.
