East Brookfield, MA, Restaurant Worker Michael Earl Dies in Crash Outside Clam Box

EAST BROOKFIELD, Mass. — A popular seafood restaurant on Route 9 is grieving the loss of a longtime employee after a serious crash occurred just outside the building over the weekend.

The collision happened around 3:30 p.m. Saturday, June 20, near The Clam Box at 245 West Main Street. East Brookfield Police asked drivers to avoid the area as emergency crews responded.

A medical helicopter was called to the scene, and a crash reconstruction team was brought in to investigate. Some reports indicated that a juvenile riding an e-bike may have been involved, though police have not released official details confirming the cause of the crash.

By Saturday evening, around 9 p.m., the road had reopened. Around that same time, The Clam Box announced it would remain closed “until further notice, due to the nature of the accident.”

A Beloved Employee Lost

On Sunday morning, the restaurant shared the heartbreaking news that one of its own had died in the crash. The employee was identified as Michael Earl, a 2025 graduate of David Prouty High School who had worked at The Clam Box for several years.

In an emotional tribute posted to social media, the restaurant’s owners described Earl as an exceptional young man and a key part of their team.

“Michael you were the exact definition of a great person! Your smile was infectious, your laugh contagious,” the owners wrote.

They recalled how Earl had started shy when he first joined the staff, but quickly grew into one of their most dependable workers, eventually earning a year-round, full-time position.

The owners also expressed deep gratitude toward those who tried to help in the moments after the crash.

“To the first responders, our employees and customers that tried everything to help, you all are true heroes in my book,” the post read. They asked for patience from the community as they take time to grieve and process the loss before reopening.

Community Rallies Around Earl’s Family

In the wake of the tragedy, a GoFundMe fundraiser was launched to support Earl’s mother and help with funeral expenses. The campaign describes him as a beloved son, nephew, and loyal friend who brought warmth and laughter into every room he entered.

By Sunday morning, the fundraiser had already collected more than $7,000 toward its $11,000 goal, reflecting the outpouring of support from neighbors, customers, and friends who knew him.

The Clam Box, known locally as both a seafood restaurant and an ice cream parlor, has long been a fixture along Route 9 in East Brookfield.

News of Earl’s death has rippled through the surrounding community, with many expressing shock and sorrow over the sudden loss of someone described as young, hardworking, and full of promise.

As of Sunday, East Brookfield Police and Fire officials had not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the crash. Investigators are continuing to look into what led to the collision, and updates are expected as the investigation moves forward.

For now, the East Brookfield community is left mourning a young man many say embodied kindness and dedication, while rallying around his grieving family during an incredibly difficult time.
