CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The family of 36-year-old Shamekia Kelly is demanding answers after she was found stabbed to death in her apartment at Lakeside Village Apartments, a case that has left investigators without named suspects and a community searching for clarity.
Kelly, who lived in Clinton Township, was discovered dead inside her apartment two days after she was killed, according to police reports and statements from her family.
Concern grew when relatives were unable to reach her, prompting a welfare check through her workplace. It was during that check that she was found deceased.
Family members describe Kelly as a caring and devoted woman who was working in the healthcare field and pursuing her nursing education.
She had spent years working as a medical technician and was reportedly close to completing her nursing program. Those who knew her say she was passionate about caring for others and building a future in healthcare.
“She was a joy. She brought joy to our family,” her sister said, reflecting on the impact Kelly had on those around her.
While police have not publicly identified a suspect, Kelly’s family believes her on-and-off boyfriend of four years may have been involved.
Relatives say the relationship had been emotionally difficult, even though they did not always see physical signs of abuse. Family members described it as a “toxic” relationship marked more by control and emotional strain than visible injuries.
Her sister said there were moments when Kelly appeared hesitant during phone conversations, sometimes speaking quietly or rushing calls, which later raised concerns in hindsight. Family members now believe those signs may have indicated she was not fully safe in the relationship.
Despite their suspicions, authorities have not confirmed any suspect and have not made any arrests. Clinton Township police have also released limited details about the ongoing investigation, saying only that they are continuing to gather evidence and await further forensic results.
Kelly’s father, Kelvin Bracey, expressed deep grief and frustration as the investigation continues without answers.
Speaking publicly, he said the pain of losing his daughter is overwhelming and called for anyone responsible to come forward. His emotional plea reflected both heartbreak and anger as the family waits for justice.
“I don’t know how to mend it,” he said, describing the loss of his daughter. He added that he hopes whoever is responsible turns themselves in.
Family members say they are struggling with the uncertainty surrounding the case, especially as no clear timeline or motive has been released.
They are urging law enforcement to move forward quickly while continuing to appeal to the public for information that may help the investigation.
Kelly’s aunt also used the moment to highlight broader concerns about domestic violence, emphasizing that abuse is not always physical. She said emotional isolation and control can be just as harmful and encouraged others to recognize early warning signs in relationships.
Community members and loved ones gathered in her memory, remembering her as a kind and hardworking woman who was focused on her future.
For her family, however, grief is now tied closely to unanswered questions and a growing demand for justice.
Police have said they are continuing their investigation and reviewing forensic evidence. As of now, the case remains open, and authorities have not released further details about potential leads.
For Kelly’s family, the wait is becoming increasingly difficult, but they say they will continue pushing for accountability until they get answers about what happened in her final moments.
