Farmington Man, James Hannan, 22, Killed in Early Morning Crash on I-84 in Middlebury

A 22-year-old Farmington man lost his life in a fatal early morning crash on Interstate 84 in Middlebury, Connecticut, according to Connecticut State Police.

The collision, which occurred in the predawn hours of Saturday, May 17, 2026, is currently under investigation by state authorities.

Troopers from Troop A responded to the scene at approximately 3:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a two-vehicle collision on the eastbound side of I-84, near the South Street Bridge between exits 16 and 17. The stretch of highway was temporarily closed following the incident as emergency crews and investigators worked at the scene.

According to state police, a tractor-trailer and a Chrysler 200 were both traveling eastbound in the center of three lanes when, for reasons that remain unknown, the Chrysler rear-ended the tractor-trailer.

The impact proved fatal for the driver of the Chrysler. The truck driver was uninjured in the crash.

Connecticut State Police identified the victim as James Hannan, 22, of Farmington.

His death has prompted a formal investigation by the Connecticut State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad, which responded to the scene to assist in piecing together the exact sequence of events leading up to the crash.

The cause of the collision has not yet been determined, and investigators have not released information regarding road conditions, speed, or any other contributing factors at the time of the crash. The investigation remains active and ongoing.

Authorities are reaching out to the public for assistance. Anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has any information that could help investigators understand what happened is urged to contact Trooper James Perazzella, badge number 762, at (203) 267-2200.

The crash comes amid a broader pattern of serious and fatal incidents on Connecticut roadways in recent weeks. A separate fatal crash on I-395 in Norwich claimed the life of a pedestrian, and another deadly collision in Bridgeport involved a man on a scooter being struck by a car.

Just days after the Middlebury crash, an 18-year-old died, and several others were hospitalized following a two-car crash in Waterbury.

Traffic safety advocates have long pointed to the dangers of overnight highway driving, particularly in the early morning hours between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., when driver fatigue is at its peak and road visibility is limited.

Rear-end collisions involving large commercial vehicles like tractor-trailers are among the most dangerous types of highway accidents, frequently resulting in catastrophic or fatal outcomes for drivers of smaller passenger vehicles.

The loss of James Hannan is a tragic reminder of the risks that drivers face on Connecticut’s highways every day.

As the community mourns, state police are asking anyone with relevant information to come forward to help bring clarity to the circumstances of this fatal crash.

The investigation by Connecticut State Police remains ongoing. No further details have been released at this time. Updates are expected as the inquiry progresses.
