In Georgia, he became the starting quarterback from 1977 through 1978 and part of 1979, guiding the team through a run-heavy offensive era that relied on option football.
He also contributed as a runner and was known for his toughness and leadership on the field. He also excelled in baseball at Georgia, becoming one of the program’s top hitters and earning All-SEC recognition as an outfielder.
In 1980, he was selected fifth overall in the Major League Baseball draft by the San Diego Padres organization, marking the highest selection ever for a Georgia player at the time.
He went on to play three seasons in the Padres minor league system and was later invited to Buffalo Bills training camp as a defensive back, though he ultimately chose to pursue law.
