This morning brought a rare phenomenon to the area: freezing fog! It was widespread and fairly thick in many spots.
Fog This Morning
Temperatures hovered around the freezing mark across the region, which may have caused some patchy black ice. Usually, fog doesn’t freeze, but today conditions were just right. The fog will burn off as the day progresses, leaving a mix of sun and clouds.
High pressure sits over our region today, with a stationary front to the south and a cold front to the northwest. Winds will be light and variable, with highs reaching the upper 40s to around 50 degrees.
Tomorrow’s Outlook
Tomorrow, the cold front will slide south and meet the stationary front, while an area of low pressure moves northeast along the front. Although the system will pass south, it will push moisture northward, similar to last Friday. This time, colder air will move further south, and winds could gust from the north/northeast at 25 mph.
At first, Monday morning will start with cloudy skies and a few sprinkles or flurries. Between 9 and 11 a.m., a scattered wintry mix is expected. Temperatures will start in the upper 30s to near 40 but will fall as precipitation increases and colder air filters south from above.
Monday Afternoon and Evening
From southern Virginia Beach southward, precipitation will mainly be rain. However, a significant area of snow is expected further north, with some spots dropping to around freezing by mid-afternoon. Scattered snow showers will continue into the evening, potentially impacting the evening commute with wet roads, poor visibility, and slushy spots.
Snow showers should taper off by Monday night. Most of the snow will stick to grass and decks, while roads are likely to remain mostly clear, though some slush may develop during the evening commute. Forecast models suggest light snow accumulations—enough to notice, but not a major winter storm.
Looking Ahead
Colder, drier air will dominate Monday night, with lows in the upper 20s and mostly cloudy skies. Tuesday may see a few flurries or sprinkles, but the day will be mainly dry with highs in the low 40s. It will remain cold and breezy.
