GoFundMe Raises Over $10K for Springfield Mom Who Lost Daughter Gnila Oberbeck Days After Graduation

A Springfield, Missouri community is grieving the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Gnila Oberbeck, a young woman who had just celebrated one of life’s biggest milestones before her life was tragically cut short.

Gnila, the beloved daughter of Amy Oberbeck, passed away on May 19, 2026, in a car accident, just days after attending her senior prom and graduating high school.

She was adored by everyone who knew her, and the outpouring of love from friends, family, and the broader Springfield community has been nothing short of remarkable.

A Daughter, A Friend, A Light Gone Too Soon

Those who knew Gnila describe her as one of those rare young people who left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

She was quiet at first, reserved until she felt comfortable, but once she let you in, her quick wit, kindness, and genuine care for others shone through brightly.

Jordan Newman, a musician who has been close to the Oberbeck family for over eight years, shared a heartfelt tribute recalling how Gnila would always go back and forth with him, playfully giving each other a hard time.

He remembered one of the last times he saw her, joking that he was going to text her mom, claiming he caught her kissing a boy.

That was the kind of easy, warm relationship Gnila had with the people around her. Newman described her as one of those kids you would always brag on, someone whose character stood out in the best possible way.

For Amy, losing Gnila just moments after the joy of graduation and prom is a grief that no words can adequately capture.

Friend and fellow community member Erica Henenberg wrote that it is a pain no mother should ever have to carry, reflecting on her own close friendship with Amy and the hours they spent on the phone talking about their children and how nothing else in the world really matters more.

Erica described Amy as kind, welcoming, nonjudgmental, and always showing up for others, whether through organizing fundraising benefits, sharing posts, or simply asking what she could do to help someone in need.

A Community Rallies Around a Family That Has Given So Much

In the days following Gnila’s death, the Springfield community has responded with tremendous love and support. A GoFundMe campaign was created by Dennis Cox to help Amy and her family cover final expenses and ease the financial burden during an unimaginable time.

The campaign, titled “In Loving Memory of Gnila Oberbeck,” has already raised over $10,000 from more than 100 donors within just one day of being created.

Cox wrote that Amy has long been the person others turn to when they are in need, someone who has given financially, organized events, and shown up repeatedly for her community without hesitation. He called this their opportunity to give some of that love back.

Jordan Newman summed up what so many people feel when he wrote that Amy and her family are not just another venue connection or acquaintance, but genuine family, people he has shared his most personal thoughts with over the years.

Gnila Oberbeck was just beginning her life. The community she leaves behind will carry her memory forward with love.
