The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for much of Virginia ahead of expected freezing conditions Sunday morning. The advisory affects central, south central, southwest, and west central regions of the state.

Counties under the advisory include Alleghany, Bath, Roanoke, Botetourt, Rockbridge, Patrick, Franklin, Bedford, Amherst, Campbell, Appomattox, and Buckingham. Cities affected include Roanoke, Salem, Radford, Lexington, Covington, Lynchburg, and Appomattox.

Forecasters are expecting freezing rain, with light ice accumulations of less than a tenth of an inch in most areas. Roads, bridges, and overpasses may become slick and hazardous. Campbell, Appomattox, and Buckingham counties could see a light glaze of ice, adding to travel risks.

The advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to noon Sunday for most areas, and from 4 a.m. to noon specifically for Campbell, Appomattox, and Buckingham counties.

Officials are urging drivers to slow down and exercise caution, while pedestrians are advised to be careful on sidewalks, stairs, and driveways, which may be icy. Travelers can get the latest road conditions by calling 511.
