KwaZulu-Natal, Grade 11 Learner Josh Bilton Passes Away, School Community in Mourning

Northwood School is grieving the loss of one of its own after the passing of Josh Bilton, a grade 11 learner who school officials say left a lasting mark on everyone he met. The school shared the news in an emotional post on social media, describing Josh as a young man with an infectious smile, a kind spirit, and genuine warmth that touched the lives of many around him.

According to the statement, Josh was deeply loved by his fellow Northwood students, often referred to as his “brothers,” and was respected and fondly remembered by his teachers.

He was known across the school community, whether on the sports fields, in the classroom, or while indulging his passion for music and DJ-ing at school events. Friends say he had a natural way of connecting with people and made an impression wherever he went.

The school also spoke about the courage Josh showed during what they described as his journey, saying he faced every challenge with quiet bravery that inspired those around him.

Northwood referred to Josh as a “brave young Squire,” a term tied to the school’s identity, and said his memory will live on in the hearts of the Northwood family. The statement noted that his absence will be deeply felt across the entire school community.

In their message, school leaders extended their thoughts, prayers, and deepest condolences to Josh’s mother, family, and friends, acknowledging the incredibly difficult time they are now facing. The post ended with a simple but heartfelt send-off: Rest peacefully, Josh.

Tributes Pour In From Friends and Schools

The announcement quickly drew an outpouring of grief and support from students, friends, and even other schools across the region. Hundreds of comments flooded in, many from people who had known Josh for years.

One friend, who said they had known him since grade 3, wrote about nine years of shared memories that they would never forget, calling him someone who would always be missed by many.

Other friends and former classmates left short but heartfelt messages, calling him a brother, a legend, and someone who was loved by all.

Several schools in the area, including St Anne’s Diocesan College and Northlands Girls High School, also posted public messages of support, extending sympathy to both the Bilton family and the wider Northwood community during what they called a tragic and unfathomably sad time.

Northwood School later confirmed that memorial arrangements had been finalized. In a follow-up post, the school announced that a memorial service would be held at Harvest Church, followed by a celebration of Josh’s life.

The service is scheduled to take place on Thursday, with the school noting that the gathering would honor him as a young Squire of Northwood.

For members of the community unable to attend in person, the school shared a live streaming link so that family, friends, and well-wishers from further afield could still take part in honoring Josh’s memory.

The hashtag “Forever a Knight” accompanied the announcement, echoing the same spirit used in the original tribute, which had carried the phrase “Always a Knight.”

As the Northwood community prepares to come together this week, the overwhelming response from students, alumni, and neighboring schools reflects just how widely Josh Bilton was known and loved, and how deeply his passing has been felt.
